If you are interest in a career in wildlife conservation, then there are a number of courses and degrees you can do to help you get started.

BSc (Hons) Wildlife Conservation
There are a number of universities in the UK and around the world, which offer science degrees specifically in wildlife conservation, and these are ideal for anyone who wants to concentrate in ecology, habitat management and biodiversity.

Degree courses also have close links with local wildlife and nature reserves, and can often include the chance for work placements in key conservation areas, which can be very beneficial for your future career. Course are normally three years long, or four years if you opt for a years work placements, and may include overseas trips so that you can study conservation in a variety of challenging and diverse environments.

A wildlife conservation degree can give you a solid foundation of knowledge to base your future career on, with a balance of natural history, ecological science and practical application, and will give students the basic skills needed to work in wildlife management, zoological and botanical conservation, sustainable development and ecology.

You will need 240-280 entry level points to apply for this type of degree in the UK, and A-levels would ideally include a high grade (c or above) in biological or environmental science, and preferably a second science as well such as chemistry, physics, geography or maths.

New Postgraduate Diploma in International Wildlife Conservation Practice
The Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU) based at the University of Oxford runs Postgraduate Diplomas in International Wildlife Conservation Practice, which aim to equip graduates with the further scientific and professional skills needed to pursue a worthwhile career in biodiversity conservation.

This course is eight months long, and teaches students techniques for monitoring wildlife habits and population, research behaviour patterns of endangered species (emphasis on carnivores, particularly wild felids) and also how to master data collection, analysis and reporting.

Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) Level 1 course
This is the main qualification that nature guides and rangers in South Africa will need to have to work on reserves and conservation areas throughout the country, and combines a mixture of theory work with written and practical exams. Various travel and wildlife associations run FGASA Level 1 course trips for students from all around the world to attend, such as Travelers Worldwide voluntary projects (www.travellersworldwide.com ). You will need to check whether all of the course fees and costs of FGASA registration, membership, theory and practical exams are included in the price. FGASA courses offer excellent opportunities to learn more about wildlife conservation in challenging environments, as well as an insight into animal behavior and identification, general camping and tracking skills and collecting data in a methodical and scientific manner.
